August is National Breastfeeding Month!
Kaiser Permanente recommends that, whenever possible, babies get nothing but breast milk for the first 6 months of life and continue to breastfeed for at least a year. Breast milk provides all the nourishment babies need in their first 6 months, is easier for them to digest than formula, and lowers the risk for many infections.
Breastfeeding is good for moms too. It speeds recovery after pregnancy and childbirth, may make it easier to lose pregnancy weight, and lowers the risk of developing health problems such as breast cancer and diabetes.
