We are excited to announce that on July 1st, six residents will begin their journey in the inaugural class of the Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States Internal Medicine Residency Program. The mission of this three-year program is to train highly competent and compassionate physicians to practice internal medicine in a patient-centered, integrated health system that serves a very diverse population. We are excited to work with these extremely talented individuals and we look forward to shaping the future of health care alongside them.
After receiving more than 1,500 applications and interviewing 200 candidates, we had an incredibly successful match in March; our first six residents began their three-year residency with orientation on June 22 and they will start seeing patients shortly. This inaugural class kicks off the ongoing cycle of Kaiser Permanente residency program education that will continue in the Mid-Atlantic; a new group of applicants will apply this summer and interview this fall – and then our second class will begin in July of 2021.
A resident is a doctor training to specialize in internal medicine for three years. Our residents have completed all the requirements of being a medical doctor. For the first year of residency, residents will engage with patients under close supervision of a board-certified Kaiser Permanente physician. After twelve months of training, residents will see patients independently, but will still consult with a board-certified physician.
Our residents are highly-skilled physicians who have come from impressive medical school programs, all of which provided their students with the opportunity to train in medical settings. Residents bring a fresh, new perspective to practicing medicine given their recent experience in medical school and we welcome these new ideas to help drive our innovative and high-quality care and service.
Our residents will be working in the following facilities:
- Gaithersburg Medical Center (all 6 floors of clinics and specialties, urgent care, and CDU)
- Kaiser Permanente Shady Grove Medical Center (Gastroenterology Clinic)
- Holy Cross Hospital (inpatient medicine, emergency medicine, subspecialty medicine, and critical care rotations)
- Veterans Affairs Medical Center (geriatrics clinic, geriatrics and palliative medicine consult service, nursing home care unit, inpatient rehabilitation services, and geropsychiatry)
