Kaiser Permanente’s top priority continues to be keeping our members and communities safe and healthy. And that includes providing you with the most up-to-date news regarding the COVID-19 booster shots.
As of September 29, Kaiser Permanente is now offering Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots for members who previously completed a two-dose series of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (a booster shot is not currently recommended for people who received the Moderna or Janssen/J&J vaccine), and received their last dose at least six months ago.
Additionally, members must also meet CDC’s eligibility criteria:
- People 65 or older should get a Pfizer COVID-19 booster .
- Long term care facility residents should get a Pfizer COVID-19 booster .
- People 50 through 64 with underlying medical conditions should get a Pfizer COVID-19 booster (see CDC website for full list of qualifying medical conditions).
- People 18 through 49 with underlying medical conditions based on individual benefit and risk may get a Pfizer COVID-19 booster (see CDC website for full list of qualifying medical conditions).
- People 18 through 64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may get a Pfizer COVID-19 booster (see CDC website for full list of qualifying occupations ).
Easy ways to get your COVID-19 booster shot
If you’re eligible for a booster, you have two options to book an appointment with us:

- Call us at 1-800-777-7904 (TTY 711)
You may also receive your booster shot outside of Kaiser Permanente. Please visit kp.org/covidvaccine for information on how you can find a vaccine at your nearest location.
What if I received the Moderna or Janssen/J&J COVID-19 vaccine?
At this time, there is no recommendation for booster doses for the other two COVID-19 vaccines (Moderna and Janssen/J&J) in any population. The Moderna vaccine has not yet been reviewed for recommendations on additional dosing, except for those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised. Neither additional nor booster doses are currently recommended for people who received the Janssen/J&J vaccine.
What is the difference between a third dose and a booster shot?
A third dose is an additional dose provided to those who may not have had a strong enough immune response from the first two doses of their Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. A third dose is currently recommended for people who are immunocompromised. For more information on who qualifies for a third dose, visit the CDC website.
A booster shot is for people whose immune response may have weakened over time.
The timing of when these doses are given is important.
